New York Fights a Lung Sickness
New York City has a dangerous lung illness. It is called Legionnaires' disease. It started in late June. Many people are now sick. About 22 are in the hospital. No one has died. Most sick people live in the same area.
The illness comes from tiny living things in water. They grow in warm water and cooling towers. People get sick when they breathe in dirty water. The illness does not pass between people. Tap water is still safe to drink. Showers are safe too.
The city is testing water in many buildings. Workers clean the water systems. The illness is worst for old and weak people. Doctors use medicine to treat it. People who feel sick should see a doctor fast.
