AI Designs First Working Viruses That Kill Bacteria

Researchers at Stanford University in California have used AI (artificial intelligence) to design the first fully functional viruses, a milestone reported in the journal Science. The team, led by assistant professor Brian Hie, generated complete genomes for bacteriophages, viruses that infect only bacteria and pose no threat to people. The models produced thousands of candidate designs, of which roughly 300 were synthesised in the laboratory.
