Legionnaires' Outbreak Sickens Dozens in New York

Legionnaires' disease is caused by bacteria called Legionella, which grow in warm, wet places such as cooling towers, air-conditioning systems, and hot tubs. People catch it only by breathing in tiny drops of contaminated water. It does not spread from person to person, and officials said residents can still safely drink tap water, shower, and use their home air conditioners. The city's health commissioner, Dr Alister Martin, said the risk of getting sick was "extremely rare." Experts say a warming climate may be making such outbreaks more common, and past cases in New York have often hit poorer neighborhoods hardest.

In response, the health department has tested water from about 160 cooling towers and told at least 19 buildings to clean and disinfect their systems. Investigators have not yet found the exact source, and officials warned that it could take another month — or may never be found. The bacteria are most dangerous to people over 50, smokers, and those with long-term lung problems or weak immune systems. Doctors can treat the illness with antibiotics, which work best in the early stages. Officials asked anyone with flu-like symptoms to see a doctor quickly, while urging people to stay calm.
