OpenAI makes ChatGPT, an AI tool. AI means artificial intelligence. On Monday, the company filed papers to sell shares to the public. This is called an IPO (initial public offering) . The sale could happen in autumn. CEO Sam Altman said he was in no rush.
Selling shares brings in lots of money. AI companies need this money. They use it to pay for big computers. OpenAI is worth 852 billion US dollars. Its rival Anthropic is worth more— 965 billion dollars. Anthropic filed for its own IPO last week.
The first company to go public will get more money from investors. OpenAI is changing ChatGPT to add new coding tools. Earlier reports said OpenAI did not meet its targets. People will watch if AI can earn real profit.
