Boxer Reeves Stays Very Ill in Hospital
The Irish boxer Lee Reeves is in a critical but stable condition in hospital. He was carried out of the ring on a stretcher in Dublin on Saturday night. Reeves, who is 31, was fighting another Irishman, Gary Cully, for a boxing title at the 3Arena. He was stopped in the tenth and final round. The Daily Mail says a heavy left hand knocked down Reeves. Medical staff helped him in the ring, and the same newspaper says he was given oxygen before he was taken to hospital.
Cully won the fight and the title. Afterwards he said that Reeves was a big underdog a fighter most people expect to lose. Reeves had been boxing at a lower level until now, but Cully said he showed he could fight higher up. The evening also included a fight between Pierce O'Leary and Mark Chamberlain, and O'Leary lost by knockout in the tenth round too.
On Sunday evening Queensberry Promotions, the company that staged the event, said Reeves was still in hospital, critical but stable. It said people would know more in the coming days. Earlier, the promoter Frank Warren wrote online that his thoughts were with Reeves and his family. Cully also said he hoped Reeves would be all right. Nobody has said yet what will happen to him.
