Mark Zuckerberg is the head of Meta. On Monday he published a long essay about superintelligence— artificial intelligence (AI) that can think better than people. He says these powerful AI tools should reach as many people and businesses as possible. They should not stay in the hands of only a few big institutions.
Zuckerberg says wide sharing is good for the economy and also safer. If only a few people, companies or governments control superintelligence, he wrote, the result will be worse for everyone else. He promised free or cheap personal AI helpers. They will have a private mode that stops Meta and other companies from seeing users' information. He also said AI will not destroy jobs. Instead, he thinks companies will become smaller, but there will be many more of them.
Meta will again share some of its AI models for free. The first model is called Muse Glimmer, and it is small enough to run on a laptop. Zuckerberg also announced a fund of $1billion for towns that have Meta data centres. Many local people are unhappy about the effects of these huge sites. He promised to hold down electricity prices and train workers.
