Brazil started their 2026 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Morocco. Morocco scored first in the 21st minute. Ismael Saibari lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alisson after a pass from Brahim Díaz. Brazil scored back in the 32nd minute. Vinícius Júnior cut in from the left and shot past Yassine Bounou. It was his 10th goal for Brazil. A crowd of 80,663 watched the game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Morocco played very well for much of the game. They had twelve shots in the first half. Brazil were missing their injured star Neymar. Former players said Brazil's display was poor and untidy. They had too many wingers and were weak in the middle of the pitch. Carlo Ancelotti is the first foreign coach to lead Brazil at a World Cup. He made changes at half-time to help his team.
After the game, Ancelotti said sorry for the poor display. But he said you do not win a World Cup after just one match. In 2022, Argentina lost their first game and still won the trophy. Brazil have not won the World Cup since 2002. That is a long wait of 24 years. Brazil next play Haiti on 19 June and Scotland on 24 June.
