Brazil opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco in Group C, with a moment of brilliance from Vinícius Júnior sparing the five-time champions an embarrassing defeat. Morocco struck first when Ismael Saibari chipped a delicate finish over goalkeeper Alisson in the 21st minute, capitalising on an incisive pass from Brahim Díaz. Brazil responded in the 32nd minute through Vinícius Júnior, who cut inside from the left and lashed the ball past Yassine Bounou for his 10th international goal.

Morocco played very well for much of the game. They had twelve shots in the first half. Brazil were missing their injured star Neymar. Former players said Brazil's display was poor and untidy. They had too many wingers and were weak in the middle of the pitch. Carlo Ancelotti is the first foreign coach to lead Brazil at a World Cup. He made changes at half-time to help his team.

After the game, Ancelotti said sorry for the poor display. But he said you do not win a World Cup after just one match. In 2022, Argentina lost their first game and still won the trophy. Brazil have not won the World Cup since 2002. That is a long wait of 24 years. Brazil next play Haiti on 19 June and Scotland on 24 June.
