A new study says very hot drinks can be dangerous. Scientists at the University of Oxford studied almost 980,000 people in Britain. They watched them for more than ten years. People who liked very hot drinks got cancer of the food pipe more often. Their risk was more than three times higher.
The study calls a drink very hot at 65 degrees Celsius or more. Heat can hurt the cells in the food pipe. Tea from a kettle that has just boiled is nearly 100 degrees. In the cup, it is still about 90 degrees. A little milk does not make it much cooler.
Doctors say people should wait before they drink. About 9,500 people in Britain get this cancer every year. The study says about 14 in every 100 cases could be stopped. But one expert says the study is not final proof.
