Many people want to walk 10,000 steps a day. Two studies say fewer steps can help the brain. In one study, about 300 older people counted their steps. Some walked 3,000 to 7,500 steps a day. Their brains got worse more slowly.
The 10,000 number started as an idea to sell things. It did not come from scientists. In another study, 3,093 people wore watches that count steps. People with more steps did better on tests.
But the studies have problems. A scientist says walking may not be the cause. Doctors say walking, good food and sleep can help.
