Studies Say 10,000 Steps Not Needed
Many people try to walk 10,000 steps every day. But two studies say you may not need that many. A Harvard study followed about 300 older adults for up to 14 years. They wore step counters, and their brains showed early Alzheimer's changes. Walking 3,000 to 7,500 steps a day slowed brain decline by three to seven years. More steps than that did not help more.
The 10,000-step goal started as a marketing idea about 60 years ago. Another study, from Baylor College of Medicine, checked Fitbit steps from 3,093 people. People who walked more steps did better on attention tests. Every extra 1,000 steps was linked to better scores.
But the studies have problems. Most people were white, with many years of school. The Baylor scientist says the study shows a link, not proof. Doctors say exercise, good food and sleep can help lower the risk of dementia.
