Flood Shows Grand Canyon Still Changing
In August 2026, heavy rain quickly caused a flood in the Grand Canyon. The canyon is in Arizona, in the United States. The National Park Service said two bodies were found. More than 60 people left by helicopter. The water broke bridges and a water pipe.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long and more than a mile deep. Its rock walls show almost two billion years of history. About five to six million years ago, the Colorado River started cutting the rock. Native Americans have lived there for thousands of years.
A scientist told the radio station KJZZ that floods happen there almost every year. But KJZZ said this flood was different. The rain fell on land burned by a fire in 2025. The burned soil could not take in the water. The broken pipe closed park hotels to guests. River guides say floods often change the river.
