Guides Fly Fifteen Waldrapp Birds to Spain
natureOct 6, 2026·300 words·3 min read
Fifteen Waldrapp birds now live with a larger group in northern Spain. Guides helped the birds travel the route out of Austria in a small plane. Biologist Bernat Garrigós leads the project at Alt Empordà, in Catalonia. The species is called the Waldrapp. For 300 years it was extinct in Europe. Foster parents from that team fly an ultralight and mark the route. Garrigós says nearly 60 birds were in the first group by 2025.
