Volunteers Fight Indonesia's Peat Fires
There are big fires in Indonesia. Thousands of volunteers fight the fires. They work with small tools and pumps. The fires burn peat. Peat is a kind of soft soil.
This year is very dry. Peat has old carbon inside. When peat burns, the carbon goes into the air. People took water out of the land for farms. Now the land burns easily.
The smoke goes to other countries too. More than 50,000 people in Indonesia got sick. Many were children. Two volunteers died. Rain can stop the fires. But heavy rain may not come until November.
