Sony said on Wednesday that it will stop making new PlayStation games on discs from January 2028. After that date, new games will only be sold through the PlayStation Store or as download codes bought in shops. Games that are already out, or planned before that date, will not change. The news came days after the makers of Grand Theft Auto VI said the game would also have no disc.
Sony called the decision a natural direction and said most players now prefer digital games. Digital downloads were about 80% of its full-game sales in 2025. When the PlayStation 4 came out in 2013, the number was only 13%. Sony started this change in 2020 with a disc-free PlayStation 5. Many people think the next PlayStation 6 will have no disc at all.
But the change has upset many people. One gaming writer called it a body blow to consumer rights. She said it hurts poorer players who share or borrow games to save money. Shops and collectors worry about losing the used-game market. Some also fear it is harder to truly own a game. Earlier, Sony removed more than 500 films and shows from users' libraries. Sony has not said if players can move their digital games later.
