Michigan Reports First Deaths From Parasite
Two people in Michigan have died from a stomach illness. Officials said this on 3 August. They were the first deaths in this outbreak. It is the biggest one in the United States. Both people were already very sick. A day later, reports said the CDC (the US health agency) was checking fifteen states.
A tiny parasite causes the illness. It spreads through dirty food or water. People get diarrhoea and stomach pain. They also feel very tired. Officials say some cases came from lettuce from a Mexican farm. The company took the lettuce back from shops.
Michigan has more than 11,000 cases. About 193 people went to hospital. Doctors say people should not panic. Deaths are very rare. Many Americans are now buying less fresh food. Officials say people should wash vegetables well.
