Michigan Reports First Deaths in Record Parasite Outbreak

Cyclosporiasis is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite spread when people consume food or water contaminated with human faeces. Symptoms usually appear about a week after infection and include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea and severe fatigue. Untreated, the illness can persist for weeks and may recur. Investigators have linked one cluster to shredded iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico by Taylor Farms and supplied to Taco Bell and other outlets. The company voluntarily recalled the produce and shut down the implicated plant, although the Daily Mail reports that tests on the lettuce have so far returned a false positive. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still investigating six separate clusters, and Michigan officials caution that other foods cannot be ruled out.

Case counts differ sharply between authorities. Michigan alone has logged 11,234 infections and 193 hospitalisations, whereas the CDC, whose surveillance counts only laboratory-confirmed infections, had recorded 6,707 confirmed cases as of 28 July, with roughly 11,500 more suspected cases awaiting confirmation; the Daily Mail reported more than 18,000 cases across 45 states this year. Doctors have urged calm, noting that deaths remain rare. "There is really no reason for alarm," said Dr Joel Kammeyer of Wayne State University, who added that dehydration poses the greatest danger to patients already managing several illnesses. Consumer behaviour has shifted regardless: a poll by CBS News (the Columbia Broadcasting System) found four in ten Americans buying less fresh produce, and lettuce sales have fallen. Officials still advise washing vegetables carefully rather than abandoning them.
