Falling Ice Caused Big Nepal Flood
A huge flood hit the border of Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday. At least 356 people died. Nearly 1,400 people are still missing. Many of them were tourists. The water destroyed villages, roads and bridges in Nepal's Rasuwa district.
At first, officials thought an earthquake caused the flood. But scientists say there was no earthquake. A big piece of a glacier broke off and fell. The ice and rock crashed into a river. They became a fast flow of mud and stones. This flow rushed down the valley.
Far down the valley, another river rose eight metres in half an hour. People said a wall of water came with no warning. The army saved more than 100 people by helicopter. About 1,200 villagers lost their homes. Scientists say warmer weather is melting the ice in these mountains.
