Democrats Win Control of US Congress
The results are not final yet, but the Democrats have won control of both parts of the US Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Americans voted in the midterm elections on Tuesday. These elections happen halfway through a president's term. The result is bad news for President Donald Trump. Some winners made history. Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim senator, and Chris Pappas became the first man open about being gay to win a Senate seat. Democrats also won in Texas and Kansas, states that usually vote Republican.
Trump was not a candidate, but the Daily Mail called the vote a test for him as president. Many voters were unhappy about high prices. In a Fox News poll, 87 per cent were worried about fuel prices, and 62 per cent blamed Trump. Trump said the war with Iran was "a piece of it". Some famous Republicans lost. But in Florida, Republican Byron Donalds became the state's first Black governor.
Trump said the Democrats did "a good job" and that he would accept the results. But he also promised to veto, or stop, laws that he thinks are crazy. With control of Congress, Democrats can now block many of Trump's plans. Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House, will probably become its leader, called the Speaker.
