Halzen Wins Nobel for South Pole Ghost Particles

Francis Halzen has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for IceCube, an observatory that catches ghost particles from space. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences made the announcement in Stockholm on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Born in Belgium, Halzen is now a United States citizen. He is 82 and works at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, which leads the IceCube project at the geographic South Pole. The academy called his vision and leadership essential to that observatory.
