Bangkok Floods After Days of Heavy Rain
Bangkok has declared a flood emergency after two days of very heavy rain. All 50 parts of the city are now emergency zones. The rain has flooded many roads, stopped traffic, and forced thousands of people to leave their homes. In some areas, more than 30 centimetres of rain has fallen since Thursday.
The city's governor said the eastern areas were hit the hardest. Workers have been trying to pump water out, but the city's canals are completely full. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old shop owner in Bangkok, said the water reached her waist. She had to close her shop for two days. She said the flooding looked worse than the big floods in 2011, when hundreds of people died across Thailand over three months.
Weather experts say the rain will continue for several more days. The government has asked people to stay at home and to move important things upstairs if they live near water. So far, no one has died in this flooding. But the city is still in danger because the rain has not stopped and the streets are still underwater.
