Bangkok Declares Flood Emergency After Heavy Rain

Thailand's monsoon season routinely brings heavy thunderstorms, but the intensity of this week's downpour has been exceptional. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the eastern districts had been hardest hit, noting that city workers were pumping water continuously but struggling to keep pace as every canal had reached capacity. For residents living near the capital's dense canal network, conditions have become particularly dire. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old shopkeeper in northern Bangkok, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that floodwater had risen to waist level outside her home, forcing her to close her business for two consecutive days. She compared the current flooding to the devastating 2011 inundation, when nationwide floods lasting three months killed hundreds of people across Thailand.

The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rain will persist through at least Sunday and possibly into the coming week, though the low-pressure system driving the downpours is expected to shift towards central Thailand. Authorities have urged residents to remain at home where possible and advised those near canals to move their belongings to upper floors as a precaution. While the comparison to 2011 has heightened anxiety among Bangkok's residents, officials have noted one critical difference: no casualties have been reported from the current flooding so far. Nevertheless, with waterlogged streets, overwhelmed drainage systems, and continuing rain forecast, the capital faces a tense wait as emergency teams work to contain the damage.
