UK Cinemas Limit Meta Smart Glasses
Cinemas in the United Kingdom want to stop people wearing smart glasses with cameras. The UK Cinema Association (UKCA) , a group for cinema owners, says many cinemas are making new rules about these glasses. Cinemas are afraid that someone could film a whole movie in secret. The glasses are made by Meta and cost £359 in Britain. They can take photos and videos without using your hands.
Other places are worried too. Restaurants, pubs, theatres and courtrooms have already made rules about the glasses. In the United States, a woman called Toluwa Omitowoju was filmed by a stranger wearing them. She only knew when friends sent her the video. More than 200,000 people had watched it. But the glasses also help some people. They can show subtitles for people who can not hear well.
Meta says the glasses are safe. A small light comes on when they are recording. Software should stop the filming if someone covers the light. But CBS News, a US news company, tested this. A reporter covered the light after starting to record, and the glasses kept filming. Meta says the light must be covered before recording starts. In May, the state of Texas started an official investigation.
