Storms Hit 90 Million in Midwest
Big storms will hit the central United States this week. More than 90 million people are in danger. They face hail, strong winds, tornadoes, and floods. Hail means hard balls of ice from the sky. Up to 4 inches of rain may fall on Tuesday. On Monday, nine states had floods.
Hot, wet air helps the storms grow. A river of fast wind high in the sky pushes them along. Other storms already hit the South. In Tennessee, up to 9 inches of rain fell. A flood emergency was called near Huntsville, Alabama.
The storms have killed people. In New York, a tree fell and killed an 85-year-old man. Winds in Brooklyn reached 64 miles per hour. More than 250 trees fell in the city. By Thursday, the storms will move east. People in Chicago, St. Louis, and Milwaukee will face new danger.
