Officials Find Canada's Missing Floating Island Again

Bob Gammer, a spokesman for BC Hydro, first thought the video might be fake, because artificial intelligence now makes online images hard to trust. Rocky Avery, a local man who shared the boaters' pictures, said he had seen nothing like it in forty years in Canada. BC Hydro believes the island covers about one hectare, or 9,800 square metres. That is about one and a half American football fields, according to the British broadcaster BBC. The New York Post said it was closer to two football fields. BC Hydro thinks driftwood collected along the shore for many years, letting plants and trees grow on it, until the whole mass broke away this summer.

The lake is very full this year after a snowy winter and a rainy summer. In June and July, BC Hydro opened the dam gates to let water out. The company does not expect any problems, but it is watching the lake in case the island drifts again. Gammer warned that the island is not solid and told people to stay away, because it could break apart.
