Storm Leaves Indiana City Without Power
A big storm hit the middle of the United States on 11 August. Seven people died. The storm hit the city of Gary, Indiana, very hard. The wind was very fast. Almost two weeks later, many homes still had no electricity. The power company gave power back to more than 306,000 homes. But 68,000 homes were still waiting.
Life in Gary is hard now. Many people in the city are poor. Families threw away bad food. They waited in line for hot meals. Schools stayed closed because fallen trees made them unsafe. Experts say machines for sick people can stop working.
Many people are angry. Some residents took the power company to court. They say the company did not cut trees near power lines. The company says it did nothing wrong. Workers are fixing the lines. Volunteers give food to people. Leaders say twelve days is too long.
