The European Union (EU) has fined Google about 1 billion dollars for breaking its competition rules. The European Commission, which runs the EU, said Google broke a law called the Digital Markets Act. This law tries to keep big technology companies fair. Google was fined because it pushed its own services, like shopping and hotels, to the top of its search results. It was also fined because it stopped app makers from telling users about cheaper deals in other places.
This is the latest action by the EU against big tech companies. A top official, Teresa Ribera, said the fine helps ordinary people. She said the best products should win because they are better, not because one company controls the search engine. Google has been punished before. It recently lost a fight against another large fine about its Android phone system. Last year, the EU also fined Apple and Meta.
Google is angry about the fine. A company leader said the decision was unfair and could remove useful search tools, like fast prices for hotels and flights. Google says it may appeal. The fine also came just before temporary US taxes on many countries were due to end, which could upset President Trump. But the EU said the two things are not connected.
