Warren Buffett is the 95-year-old chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. He has ended a 20-year giving partnership with the Gates Foundation. On Tuesday, Buffett said he would give about $6billion in company shares to four foundations run by his family. He did not mention the Gates Foundation. Since 2006, the foundation had received more than $47billion from him.
The decision ends one of the most famous partnerships in modern charity. Buffett and Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, were once close friends. In 2010, they started the Giving Pledge, which asked the world's richest people to give away most of their money. Buffett had already said in 2024 that his gifts would stop after his death. Recently, he has grown distant from Gates after government files showed Gates's past contact with Jeffrey Epstein. Gates has not been accused of any crime and says he regrets the connection.
Buffett's remaining shares are worth more than $140billion. This money will now go to his family's charities. Most of this year's gift goes to a foundation led by his daughter Susie. Buffett said all his remaining shares would be given away by the end of 2034. The Gates Foundation thanked Buffett for his years of support. It said it is still strong and will continue its work until 2045.
