Old Woman Loses Home, Madrid Protests
An 87-year-old woman in Madrid has lost her home. She lived there for more than 70 years. On September 23, people carried her out of her flat. Some people tried to stop them, but they could not. On Saturday, tens of thousands of people marched in Madrid. Many people then slept in tents in a big square.
Her father first rented the flat in 1956. Later, a company bought it. The company made her rent much higher. It went from 500 euros to 2,650 euros a month. Her pension was too small to pay it. In Spain, homes cost a lot of money. There are also not enough homes for everyone.
The protesters want new laws to help renters. They say they will stay in the square until the laws come. The prime minister of Spain promised new housing rules.
