An 87-year-old woman's forced eviction from the Madrid flat she had lived in for over 70 years has led to huge protests about Spain's housing crisis. On Wednesday, September 23, María del Carmen Abascal, whom supporters call "Maricarmen", was carried out of her home in the wealthy Retiro area on a stretcher. Supporters who had tried to stop the eviction chanted her name. Pictures of the scene spread across Spain.
