Romanian F-16 Shoots Down Drone in NATO First

Each member polices its own airspace, but within NATO's collective air-defence system, so one country's shot carries alliance-wide weight. Romania borders Ukraine, and its defence ministry has recorded dozens of drone incursions and debris incidents since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. In June a Ukrainian maritime drone exploded at the Black Sea port of Constanța; a month earlier a stray Russian drone hit an apartment block, injuring two people. No earlier incursion had ended in a shootdown: Țoiu said on 2 July that British Typhoon fighters at Fetești had been scrambled under NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission when Russian drones were detected 19 miles from Romania's border. Of Friday's drone, Țoiu said the debris was still being analysed, but that the pattern was consistent with earlier confirmed Russian flights. Fox News Digital said Russia's defence ministry did not respond to a comment request.

The interceptions came as Russia pressed on with strikes across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said a drone strike killed three courier drivers in the Sumy region, while an attack on a defence-industry event near Kyiv killed at least ten and wounded nearly a hundred. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence indicated Russia was preparing a large missile barrage within 48 hours, and again called Patriot interceptors his "number one priority". The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet on Ukraine on Monday at Kyiv's request. For the alliance the precedent matters: a member has now used lethal force in its own airspace, sharpening the question of how NATO responds if incursions continue.
