Romanian Jet Shoots Down Drone in NATO First

Members guard their own skies within a defence network NATO runs together, so one shot draws the whole alliance's attention. Romania lies beside Ukraine, and its ministry has logged dozens of drone flights and wreckage finds since the Russian invasion of February 2022. A Ukrainian sea drone blew up at the Black Sea harbour of Constanța in June; a month earlier a Russian machine strayed into a block of flats, hurting two. Țoiu recalled on 2 July that British Typhoon fighters at Fetești had taken off under alliance air policing duties when Russian drones appeared 19 miles from the border. She added that experts were still examining Friday's wreckage, though its pattern resembled Russian flights confirmed earlier.

Russia has meanwhile kept up its bombardment. Ukrainian officials said three courier drivers died in a drone attack on the Sumy region, and a strike on a defence industry gathering outside Kyiv left at least ten dead. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a heavy missile assault could follow within two days. Ukraine has asked the United Nations Security Council to meet on Monday.
