Paraguay Stun Germany on Penalties at World Cup

Paraguay, ranked 41st in the world, were big underdogs, and had even lost their opening game 4–1 to the United States. Coached by the experienced Argentinian Gustavo Alfaro, they defended deep and frustrated Germany, who kept the ball but created few chances. Julio Enciso, a former Brighton and Ipswich forward, headed Paraguay in front in the 42nd minute. Kai Havertz equalised on 54 minutes with a header from Florian Wirtz's cross. Germany thought they had won it in extra time, but Jonathan Tah's goal was ruled out by VAR (Video Assistant Referee) for a foul on goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

The shootout exposed Germany's weakness. Gill saved from Havertz and Nick Woltemade, and Tah fired his kick over the bar before José Canale scored the winner. Germany's 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saved one penalty too, but it was not enough to rescue his team. Paraguay now go to the last 16 in Philadelphia on July 4, where they will face the winner of France against Sweden. The defeat increased pressure on Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp named as a possible replacement. For Paraguay, it was the greatest night in their World Cup history.
