Paraguay caused one of the biggest shocks in football history on Monday, knocking four-time world champions Germany out of the 2026 FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup. The round-of-32 match, played near Boston on June 29, finished 1–1 after 120 minutes. Paraguay then won the penalty shootout 4–3. For Germany it was a painful first: they had never lost a World Cup shootout before.
