Paraguay caused a huge shock on Monday. They knocked Germany out of the 2026 FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup. The game near Boston finished 1– 1 after 120 minutes. Then Paraguay won the penalty shootout 4– 3. Germany are four-time world champions, but they had never lost a World Cup shootout before.
Paraguay were not expected to win. They are ranked 41st in the world, and they lost their first game 4 –1to the United States. But they defended well and stopped Germany from scoring easily. Julio Enciso put Paraguay in front in the 42nd minute. Kai Havertz scored for Germany in the 54th minute. Germany thought they scored again in extra time, but the referee ruled the goal out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
In the shootout, goalkeeper Orlando Gill saved two German kicks. Jonathan Tah also kicked the ball over the bar. Then José Canale scored to win the game for Paraguay. Now Paraguay will play in the last 16 in Philadelphia on July 4. The loss put pressure on Germany's coach. Some people think Jürgen Klopp could be the next coach.
