scienceJul 28, 2026·379 words·3 min read
Britain's Jodrell Bank Observatory, home to the country's largest radio telescope for nearly 70 years, is facing closure after its main funder withdrew financial support. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) confirmed on Monday that it will stop paying for e-Merlin, the national radio astronomy network centred on the Cheshire site, when the current agreement expires in March 2028. The BBC reports that, without a new backer, the observatory will shut down its research programme entirely on 1 April 2028.
