Chinese AI Kimi K3 Pauses New Subscriptions

Kimi K3 was released late last week. It was trained on 2.8 trillion parameters, a number that shows how large a model is, making it the biggest open-source model so far. Open-source models are shared publicly so others can study them and build on them, an approach Chinese developers use to compete with American laboratories at a much lower cost. In tests, Kimi K3 came first on the Arena platform for front-end coding, and the New York Post reported that it beat Anthropic's Opus 4.8 and OpenAI's ChatGPT 5.5 on most coding tasks, though it remains behind Anthropic's Fable model. Lian Jye Su, an analyst at the research group Omdia, said the problem showed Moonshot does not have enough computer chips for the demand.

The shortage comes as export controls led by the United States limit China's access to the most advanced chips. The release still worried investors in American technology companies, who fear cheaper Chinese models could force rivals to lower their prices. Moonshot, founded in 2023 by researcher Yang Zhilin, has raised more than $5.5 billion and was valued at $30 billion in June.
