Chinese AI Kimi K3 Stops New Users
Moonshot AI is an artificial intelligence (AI) company in Beijing, China. Only days after it released its new Kimi K3 model, it stopped taking new paying users. Too many people wanted to use it, and the company's computers could not do all the work. Moonshot wrote on the website X that demand in just 48 hours had reached almost the limit of what it could handle. It said it would help its current paying users first.
Kimi K3 is an open-source model. This means other people can look at it and use it to build their own programs. Chinese companies make these models much more cheaply than American companies. In tests, Kimi K3 was the best at one kind of computer coding. It also did better than two well-known American models on most coding tasks, but it is still not as good as the strongest one. An expert said Moonshot does not have enough computer chips for so many users.
The United States does not let China buy the most advanced computer chips, so Chinese companies often do not have enough computing power. The new model also worried investors in American technology companies. They think cheaper Chinese models could make it harder for American companies to charge high prices.
