Apple Unveils First Foldable iPhone at $1,999

Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone and the most substantial redesign of the device since its debut in 2007. It was unveiled on Wednesday at the company's Cupertino headquarters in California, where John Ternus gave his first keynote since succeeding Tim Cook as chief executive on 1 September. Folding shut like a passport, the Duo offers Apple's largest display and, opened, its thinnest handset; the inner screen is roughly 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro's.

John Ternus became Apple's chief executive on 1 September, and this was his first big event. Apple has reportedly been testing folding screens since 2021. Ternus said other folding phones feel like "two phones stuck together". Apple has also said that a shortage of memory chips forced it to raise MacBook and iPad prices.

Experts do not agree about the new phone. One expert said Apple chose the date carefully. Another warned that the Duo could become an expensive object that few people buy. The iPhone earns more than half of Apple's money each year. Folding phones are only about 2% of world phone sales today. The news was widely expected. Apple's share price fell about 2% after the event.
