Williams is 46 years old. She is the oldest singles player at the US Open since 1981. It will be her 26th time at the famous tournament.
Williams has had a long career. She won the US Open in 2000 and 2001, and she has seven Grand Slam titles in total. But this season has been very difficult. She lost all ten of her singles matches. She also lives with a long-term illness that causes her pain. This week she played doubles with her younger sister Serena in Cincinnati. It was their first tournament together since 2022.
Not everyone likes the decision. Some fans say the place should go to a young player. Others say the Williams sisters still bring big crowds to the stadium. One more wildcard is free, and many people expect it to go to Serena, who is 44. The tournament begins on 30 August.
