The United States economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This came as a surprise: economists had expected the country to add about 80,000 jobs. It was the second month in a row of weaker-than-expected hiring. The BLS also lowered its earlier estimates for May and June by a combined 103,000 jobs, showing the summer slowdown was deeper than first thought.
