Trump Puts 50% Tax on Canadian Cars
United States President Donald Trump has announced a new 50% tariff on cars, trucks, car parts and steel from Canada. A tariff is a tax on goods coming into a country. The tax will begin on 1 January 2027. The news came after trade talks between the two neighbours failed. Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, left the talks late on Friday. He said the American side changed its terms at the last minute, and that the new terms were unfair.
This is not the first tax. Washington had already put a 50% tariff on about $20bnof Canadian exports, from hockey sticks to tongue depressors. The American trade representative, Jamieson Greer, said Canada had broken promises it made only days earlier. Carney disagreed. He said Washington asked too much and offered too little. Canada will answer with its own taxes from 8 September.
The effect is clear in a single car. From January, a car built in Ontario and sent to an American dealer will face a 50% charge at the border. The importer pays this money, not the Canadian factory, and the cost usually reaches the buyer. Canada will also tax American steel, dairy products, machines and paper. One study says Trump's tariffs on goods from all countries will cost American families about $1,100a year.
