The 130th Boston Marathon on Monday produced record-breaking performances alongside a remarkable act of sportsmanship that resonated far beyond the finish line. Near the end of the 42-kilometre course on Boylston Street, runner Ajay Haridasse collapsed four times due to severe cramps and was preparing to crawl to the finish. Aaron Beggs, a club runner from Northern Ireland, stopped to help but lacked the strength to support Haridasse on his own. Seeing the struggle, Brazilian competitor Robson De Oliveira made what he called a split-second decision to abandon his pursuit of a personal best and assist both men, enabling the trio to cross the finish line together.
The selfless gesture unfolded against a backdrop of elite excellence at this year's race. Defending champion John Korir of Kenya shattered the men's course record with a time of 2:01:52, beating a mark that had stood since 2011 by over a minute. Fellow Kenyan Sharon Lokedi secured her second consecutive women's title in 2:18:51. In the wheelchair divisions, Switzerland's Marcel Hug achieved a remarkable fourth straight victory, bringing him within one win of the all-time record of ten Boston titles, while Britain's Eden Rainbow-Cooper reclaimed the women's wheelchair crown. Among the approximately 30,000 participants, British Olympian Calli Hauger-Thackery completed the marathon in 2:43 while 22 weeks pregnant, calling the experience incredible and more meaningful than her previous athletic achievements.
The act of kindness on Boylston Street drew widespread praise on social media and in the running community. Former Massachusetts Governor and current NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletic Association) President Charlie Baker wrote on social media platform X that such moments exemplify why he loves the Boston Marathon, adding that this happens over and over every single year. Haridasse, a Northeastern University student on a co-operative placement with athletic brand New Balance, described the day as the greatest experience ever despite his physical ordeal. De Oliveira ended up in the medical tent alongside Haridasse, who was treated for dehydration, underscoring the toll the rescue took on both men. Both Haridasse and De Oliveira have confirmed their intention to return for the 2027 edition of the race, while Beggs was hailed as a superstar and phenomenal sportsman by his running club, North Down Athletic Club.
