Runners Stop to Help Rival at Boston Marathon
The 130th Boston Marathon on Monday was a day of record-breaking runs and an inspiring display of sportsmanship. Near the end of the race on Boylston Street, runner Ajay Haridasse collapsed four times because of severe cramps. He was about to crawl to the finish when Aaron Beggs, a runner from Northern Ireland, stopped to help him. However, Beggs could not support Haridasse alone. Robson De Oliveira, who was close to achieving his personal best time, noticed the situation and immediately gave up his own race to help. Together, the three men crossed the finish line.
The helping moment was just one highlight of an exceptional day of racing. Kenya's John Korir defended his title and broke the men's course record with a time of 2:01:52, beating a record that had stood since 2011. Sharon Lokedi, also from Kenya, won the women's race for the second year in a row with a time of 2:18:51. Switzerland's Marcel Hug won the men's wheelchair race for the fourth consecutive year, and Britain's Eden Rainbow-Cooper took the women's wheelchair title. Among the roughly 30,000 participants, British Olympian Calli Hauger-Thackery finished the marathon while 22 weeks pregnant, completing the course in 2 hours and 43 minutes.
The act of kindness received enormous praise online. Charlie Baker, the former Governor of Massachusetts and current president of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletic Association) , wrote on social media that such moments happen at Boston every year. Haridasse, a university student working with sports brand New Balance, called it the greatest experience of his life, despite needing treatment for dehydration afterwards. De Oliveira also needed medical attention after the effort. Both runners plan to return for the 2027 race, while Beggs was praised as a phenomenal sportsman by his running club.
