Nvidia Boss Dismisses 2030 AI Doomsday Warnings

Coxon's remarks, which were backed by two other Anthropic researchers, sparked an international debate about the dangers of ever more powerful AI systems. Several industry leaders, including Anthropic's Dario Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman, have since called for development to be slowed down. Huang, however, argued that extinction forecasts are "not grounded in science" and that existing laws on cybersecurity and product liability are sufficient to deal with harmful AI. He even suggested that some companies calling for new safety rules were really hoping to escape the laws that already apply to them. As CBS News noted, Nvidia has a great deal at stake: its specialised chips power many of the most advanced AI models, making it the world's most valuable company, worth more than $5 trillion. Huang insisted that his firm's success depends on AI being deployed safely.

Huang's position echoes that of President Donald Trump, who has dismissed anxiety about AI as a "hoax" and warned that a slowdown could hand China an advantage. Some technologists share this view: Guillaume Verdon, founder of the Effective Accelerationism movement, told the New York Post that the belief that AI will kill us all is "more dangerous than the AI itself". Nevertheless, the public remains uneasy, with a Pew Research Center survey of 3,488 adults finding that 52% were more concerned than excited about AI's growing role in daily life. Huang is due to attend a White House dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on 24 September, where he hopes to discuss global standards for AI development.
