NASA Study: Titan Could Fuel Deep-Space Missions

The concept relies on in-situ resource utilisation (ISRU), the long-standing idea of exploiting local materials rather than hauling everything from Earth. While most ISRU research has focused on the Moon and Mars, Nixon's team — which included engineers from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the University of Florida — argues that Titan has been unfairly overlooked. Unlike those nearer worlds, where methane is scarce, Titan offers raw materials that could be refined into rocket fuel, plastics, synthetic rubber, fertiliser and even food. Its water, which accounts for roughly half the moon's mass, could yield drinking water, oxygen and hydrogen propellant. Echoing the writer Robert Zubrin, the researchers suggest Saturn's moons could become the "Persian Gulf" of the solar system.

Significant obstacles remain. Surface temperatures average a cryogenic minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit, atmospheric pressure is about 50 percent higher than Earth's, and gravity is just one-seventh as strong; oxygen, absent from the air, would have to be generated through electrolysis. Reaching Titan would also demand nuclear propulsion to shorten the journey. The authors stress that no current or planned mission, including NASA's Dragonfly rotorcraft due to launch around 2028, will need Titan's resources. Yet they contend that more ambitious ventures eventually will, whether to refuel ships heading toward Uranus and Neptune or to sustain permanent settlements. "There is simply no other world that we know of like Titan," Nixon said, calling its long-term potential unrivalled.
