Miami Scientists Move Coral Ashore to Escape Heat

On Wednesday 22 July 2026, scientists at the University of Miami moved 30 pieces of elkhorn coral from sea nurseries to a hatchery on land in Key Biscayne, Florida. They hope to protect the endangered coral from a summer of dangerous ocean heat. Divers chose pieces with different genes, wrapped each one in wet bubble wrap, and moved them into indoor tanks.
