The El Niño developing over the Pacific Ocean is likely to be the strongest in living memory, the Met Office, the United Kingdom's national weather service, has warned. Scientists declare an El Niño when sea surface temperatures across a key area of the Pacific rise 0.5C or more above average. Current measurements are already well over 2C above normal, and Met Office forecasts suggest the anomaly could exceed 3C later this year as the event nears its peak.
