Melting Swiss Glacier Reveals Climbers Missing Since 1992

On 26 July a hiker walking across the Trift Glacier, in the southern Swiss canton of Wallis near the Italian border, came upon two bodies lying exposed on the ice. On Wednesday the regional Wallis police announced that a direct comparison of DNA profiles had formally identified them as two mountaineers who disappeared in the Weissmies region in 1992. Both men were Belgian nationals, aged 39 and 41 when they went missing, and their remains had lain in the ice for 34 years.
