Melting Glacier Reveals Climbers Missing Since 1992

The discovery happened because Alpine ice is shrinking. Warmer temperatures have made glaciers melt faster, and as the ice grows thinner it gives back what it has held for decades. Wallis police keep a list of missing people that goes back to 1925, most of them lost in high mountains or in rivers. In their statement, they said that the remains of people who vanished long ago now appear again and again. In 2023, a German hiker missing for nearly forty years was found in the Theodul Glacier, and last year the bones of a Swiss climber who disappeared in 1994 came to the surface on the Ober Gabelhorn.

The identification turns an unsolved disappearance into a confirmed death after more than thirty years. The same pattern can be seen far outside the Alps. In Pakistan, a melting glacier returned a man's body 28 years after he was lost. In 2025, the remains of a British researcher who vanished in Antarctica in 1959 were found near a glacier that had pulled back.
