Harry's Family Meets King Charles After Four Years

The reunion followed years of distance. Harry and Meghan gave up their roles as senior royals in 2020 and moved to California. After that, their taxpayer-funded security in Britain was reduced, and protection is now decided case by case by a government committee. Relations became worse after Harry's book, Spare, and after interviews and a documentary that criticized how the royal household had treated them. This trip had been in doubt: the BBC (the British Broadcasting Corporation) reported that Harry was thinking about leaving his family at home, because his request for police protection had been refused.

The meeting ended a difficult week for Harry. On Tuesday, the High Court rejected his long privacy case against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail. The court said that phone tapping and other illegal methods could not be proven. On the day of the reunion, an observer told the Daily Mail that Harry looked delighted at an Invictus Games event near Birmingham. Whether one private afternoon can repair this family remains unclear.
